The Tlicho First Nation is the primary Aboriginal group in proximity to Fortune’s NICO deposit in the Northwest Territories. We strive to develop productive working relationships with all residents within the operating areas around our projects and are involved in ongoing consultation to ensure sensitivity to the protection of First Nation lands and water, Traditional Knowledge, history and culture.

Fortune Minerals co-sponsored former NHL player Jordin Tootoo’s Inspired Inclusivity presentations in the Northwest Territories communities of Whati and Behchoko. The presentations focus on his journey from the isolated indigenous community of Rankin Inlet to his career in the NHL and the adversity he faced on his journey. Jordin touches on topics ranging from addiction, mental health and suicide, delivering an uplifting message that sparks and encourages conversation around these difficult topics. Fortune Minerals wishes to thank Jordan in his efforts to encourage Youths and Elders to work together to overcome adversity in their communities.

Fortune Minerals co-sponsored the Mining Rocks Earth Science Education Program for Grade 4 students at elementary schools in the Northwest Territories, including Elizabeth Mackenzie Elementary School in the Tlicho community of Behchoko. This program, presented by Mining Matters, is designed to introduce students to geology and career opportunities in the minerals industry. The program initiates students to practical geological and mineral exploration activities, including prospecting, claim staking and mapping, as well as the use of GPS technology, and environmental responsibilities and stewardship. Students benefit from hands-on, curriculum-linked classroom activities and a field trip to the Ranney Hill Geological Interpretive Trail.

Fortune Minerals established two educational awards to help support Tlicho students already enrolled or entering post-secondary education programs in the fields of Geology, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Business and Accounting, and Health Care.
